Rachel and Tia launched Alchemy three years ago – with a few boutiques dotted around Goa. They recognise that strength is in partnership and collaboration and invite other designers from India to showcase their collections. It is easier to work together and inspire each other to keep evolving and thinking creatively and sustainably. Traditionally, alchemy was about creation and experimentation and these are the key concepts that they have taken into the shop. The essence of Alchemy is always changing – bringing in new ideas, designers, new inspirations and collaborations.
Both inspired by handmade fabrics – they experiment with lightweight cottons, silks and sustainable hemp. Their time together has influenced their colour palate – natural and earthy tones with a few gem colours. Tia has a palette of black and off-white, with soft greys and charcoals, burnt brick and olive; while again black, off-white and smokey greys are key to the FARA collections, they also play with jewel colours like tourmaline and dusky ruby pinks in their tie-dye collections.
As designers, they are inspired by travel and movement, the beach and the jungle. Dressing the nomadic traveller with kaftans and dresses that hug and float in the right places…. Tia also has a range of swimwear and FARA offer us beautiful illustrated silk scarves.
Rachel and Tia met four years ago at the creative hub of the Saturday Night Market in North Goa. Here too, they were surrounded by other conscious creatives from around India and the world-at-large – the Alchemy flagship store and the new online platform stocks beautiful elemental jewellery from Diane Singh; tribal print creations from Alekai; raw silk jackets and hand block print kimonos from The White Raven; and inspired pieces from traditional Ikat weavers with Ikat Story.
